ANC NEC: No one implicated in Madlanga Commission is untouchable

BOKSBURG - The African National Congress (ANC)’s national executive committee (NEC) says no one implicated in the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry is untouchable.

Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said if there’s sufficient evidence for legal steps to be taken, this should happen even before the commission concludes its work.

Briefing on the outcomes of a recent NEC meeting, Mbalula said on Tuesday that the NEC wants the revelations emerging at the commission and at Parliament’s ad hoc committee probing police corruption to accelerate the party’s renewal programme.

The ANC has ordered its integrity commission to actively track the testimony being delivered at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry and Parliament’s ad hoc committee. 

Mbalula said the expectation was that the party’s ethics body makes recommendations on any potential action in line with its mandate and terms of reference.

He said this was in line with the ANC’s commitment to cleanse itself. 

"So, there should be no holy cows when the recommendations come and they point in the direction that some of us have erred in the course of duty."

Both the former and current police ministers, Bheki Cele and Senzo Mchunu, have found themselves in the firing line at Parliament’s ad hoc committee probing police corruption. 

Mbalula said the ANC was fully behind both police probes, believing the outcomes would strengthen institutions of state.
