The City of Cape Town says plans to prevent drownings at its beaches and community pools this summer season are in full swing.
Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis launched the metro's festive season beach safety plan on Tuesday.
Fourteen fatal drownings were reported last summer across the city.
The municipality said that more than 680 city lifeguards have been deployed across swimming areas to prevent such incidents from happening.
The city's Helen Curran: "So we are sitting on the same number year-on-year and our aim for this season is to improve that number. This season, currently there are zero fatal drownings at our city-managed beaches. I know we are getting towards the end of November and this is significant for us because we know drownings usually start around September."
