The Maitland flying squad on Wednesday uncovered illegal abalone valued at R100,000 while patrolling the N2 highway near Macassar.

Officers had flagged down a suspicious-looking vehicle and discovered over 200 units of abalone, as well as an imitation firearm.

Police spokesperson Wesley Twigg: "An adult male was arrested for the possession of an imitation firearm and the illegal possession of abalone."
