Schools must be places of learning and development and not scenes of tragic loss.
That's according to the chairperson of the portfolio committee on community safety in the Gauteng provincial legislature, Bandile Masuku.
He's reacted to an incident at Inxiweni Primary School in Tembisa, in which the principal and another staff member were shot and killed inside the administration block on Tuesday.
When tragedy struck at around 5pm, the women, both in their fifties, were reportedly preparing for a meeting scheduled to take place later this week.
Masuku said that learners, teachers and staff should never have to fear for their safety while carrying out their duties within a school premises.
"This appalling act of violence, committed in a space where children should feel safe and protected, highlights the severe and escalating impact of gun violence in our communities. The committee condemns this senseless attack in the strongest possible terms. It is unacceptable that lives continue to be taken so violently."
