Airports company South Africa has said that it does not expect any electricity supply disruptions at OR Tambo International airport this weekend.

The airport is set to experience high passenger volumes from Thursday, as international visitors begin arriving for the G20 leaders’ summit.

In recent weeks, OR Tambo has experienced several power interruptions that affected operations.

On Wednesday, the transport department held a media briefing to highlight the readiness of ports of entry to receive G20 delegates.

The OR Tambo International airport, Waterkloof Airforce base, and Lanseria International airport are the official entry points for G20 heads of state.

But just two days ago, OR Tambo was plunged into darkness during an unexpected power outage, believed to have been caused by an Eskom supply failure.

Transport minister Barbara Creecy said there’s no sign that this will happen again this time around, but says if it does, backup systems will kick in immediately.

"Should power be lost to or tambo, we do have backup generators that will take a few seconds to kick in. They will provide uninterrupted power supply and ensuring that critical terminal, airside, western precinct and cargo activities continue uncompromised,".

She added that the aviation sector has carried out all required safety inspections in preparation for welcoming G20 delegates.
