Psychiatrist Dr Alicia Porter says it is important to ask your medical professional what you should expect at what point and how long you should give it a try for?

Expert advice on antidepressants

Many South Africans are on antidepressants yet stigma around their use, persists.

Dr Alicia Porter, who is a psychiatrist, says there are misconceptions about the medication including that they're just happy pills that create artificial happiness.

"But what they're doing is treating the biology."

Another one is: "If I need medication then I must be weak. But depression changes brain chemistry, it's not a character flaw."

She stressed that it's important that antidepressants are correctly prescribed and monitored because "there's no one-size-fits-all. Not all do the same thing. And there are different classes."

What criteria do you check to see if antidepressants are warranted?

It's about your job description in all areas of your life... school or work or caregiving ability. If there are definitely shifts in your sleep, in your appetite in your energy levels then there's a biological element. Or if it affects relationships. You're more irritable, short tempered, with low frustration tolerance.

"Also if you can't shake it, despite embarking on self-care and support. Or if there are other symptoms like anxiety, trauma or suicidality. These are scenarios that suggest depression."

When can you start expecting results?

"They're not like painkillers where you have a headache, you take the painkiller and you're going to have a response," said Dr Porter.

When you start you expect results almost immediately but wait for 4 to 8-weeks to judge the response.

"So don't quit after two weeks."

Dr Porter said it was important to ask your medical professional what you should expect at what point and how long you should give it a try for?
