The prosecution team in the high-profile trial of alleged underworld gang boss, Nafiz Modack, has started questioning Modack about his alleged involvement in the murder of top cop, Lieutenant Charl Kinnear.

Modack and 14 others face 122 charges for various crimes, including Kinnear's murder five years ago.

Kinnear was a high-ranking member of the anti-gang unit, who was investigating Modack before being shot dead outside his Bishop Lavis home in September 2020.

State prosecutor Greg Wolmarans on Wednesday presented the court with evidence to show that Modack had intent to murder Kinnear.

Wolmarans showed the court a newspaper article that quoted Modack criticising Kinnear for allegedly making fake cases against him and his associates.

Evidence shows Kinnear arrested co-accused Jacques Cronje for kidnapping and intimidating a former State witness who can only be identified as "Mister Vallie" related to an alleged extortion on behalf of Modack.

It's the State's case that Modack was behind an attempt on attorney William Booth's life, after he obtained a protection order against Cronje in the same matter.

"Then the next target, and I'm going to take us through the evidence now, becomes Mr Kinnear, the other person associated with Mr Vallie."

Modack insists that Kinnear was part of a conspiracy against him on behalf of his alleged underworld rival, Jerome "Donkie" Booysen.
