A taxi driver is facing multiple charges, including driving under the influence and hit-and-run, after allegedly running over a runner during the Soweto Marathon.
The 37-year-old woman was struck near the intersection of the Soweto highway and main road in Orlando East on Saturday and was rushed to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital with serious injuries.
Johannesburg metro police said that the 39-year-old driver tried to flee the scene but was arrested.
A breathalyser test showed a reading of 0.26 milligrams per litre well above the legal limit for professional drivers.
JMPD Spokesperson Xolani Fihla said that the driver now faces a range of criminal charges as investigations continue.
"The JMPD views this violation of traffic laws and the disregard for the safety of road users, especially during a major public event, in the most serious light. We wish the injured runner a speedy and full recovery. He will appear at the Orlando Magistrates Court on Monday.
