The Cape Town Cycle Tour has entered a new global era with its acceptance into the UCI Gran Fondo World Series, becoming the first road cycling event in Africa to secure the status.
The 2026 race, taking place on 8 March, will now serve as a qualifier for the international series, allowing the top 25% of finishers to advance to other Gran Fondo events worldwide.
Cycle Tour CEO David Bellairs says the partnership with global events company Golazo is designed to boost the event’s operational strength, commercial appeal, and international reach.
He adds that the global status will attract foreign participants and sponsors while supporting South Africa’s broader sports tourism ambitions.
Despite the international uplift, Bellairs emphasises that the event remains rooted in community values, supporting cycling development, charity initiatives, and inclusive participation.
"It isn't about necessarily racing. The wonderful thing about the cycle tour is that we're riding on closed roads. So, you've got seven hours to go around the Cape Peninsula and enjoy it. Inasmuch as there will be people racing to qualify for the world champs, there are going to be those people who are out there on closed roads, enjoying a spectacular day around one of the most beautiful peninsulas in the world. Ultimately, it's about cause. It's about putting back into the community."
Entries are already open, with organisers planning to cap participation at around 30,000 riders.
