President Cyril Ramaphosa has designated the funeral of uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) veteran Promise Khumalo as a Special Provincial Official Funeral Category 2.

Khumalo passed away more than a week ago in Johannesburg at the age of 63.

The mother of TV and radio personality Masechaba Mposwa, Khumalo dedicated her life to fighting in the anti-apartheid movement.

Khumalo later became what the Gauteng government has described as a formidable journalist who became a pioneering broadcaster for Radio Freedom, the African National Congress (ANC)’s underground radio station.

Khumalo was the first MK woman to be sent on a cinematography course in Geneva, Switzerland, in a cross-cultural exchange programme with ISIS International.

This saw her working with a London-based bi-monthly newspaper called Outwrite based in Oxford House.

After spending 20 years in exile, Khumalo returned to South Africa and became a general manager at the SABC’s Channel Africa before serving in government.

Khumalo will be laid to rest on Tuesday.
