It’s a big day for the African National Congress (ANC) in Johannesburg, as its regional elective conference gets underway on Wednesday morning.

Over the next three days, party branches will elect new regional leadership and engage in discussions on policy and organisational governance.

The leaders chosen at this conference will steer the ship in the city until the next elective conference in 2028.

The event is being held at the Cedar Woods Hotel in Sandton.

The ANC’s regional executive committee in Johannesburg was dissolved after its three-year term came to an end.

A task team, led by Dada Morero and Sasabona Manganye, was then appointed to oversee preparations for this elective conference.

Discussions at the conference will focus on the coalitions the ANC is part of, which limit its ability to govern the city independently.

The outgoing regional leader, Morero, said everything is now in place for the regional elective conference to proceed.

“The regional task [team] had its final meeting and today, they are still left with two items on the agenda. They’ve adopted the programme of the conference, which is starting tomorrow.”

By the end of this week, Morero will know whether he’ll remain the ANC’s top leader in Johannesburg.
