Incumbent African National Congress (ANC) chairperson in Johannesburg Dada Morero has reflected on his three-year term as the party’s regional leader, describing it as a period marked by both successes and challenges.

It was day one of the three-day gathering, where ANC branches are expected to cast their ballots for a new leadership structure on Thursday.
Morero is seeking re-election as regional chairperson but faces a strong challenge from Loyiso Masuku, who enjoys wide support among some branches.
Morero was elected as the ANC’s Johannesburg chairperson in 2022 after serving more than 11 years as a regional secretary.
At the time, the ANC sat in opposition in the city council, with the Democratic Alliance (DA)-ActionSA coalition running the metro.
Morero said reclaiming governance was among his key achievements, but admitted the journey was not smooth sailing.
“Generally, we had a good leadership and a good REC [regional elective conference]. We had contradictions here and there, but we were a formidable team, and we retained most of the wards that we contested.”
A full report on Morero’s tenure is expected to be tabled on Thursday.
After that, voting will get underway to elect a new regional leadership structure that will steer the ANC in Johannesburg for the next three years.
