South Africa will find out its group-stage opponents for the 2026 FIFA World Cup during a draw scheduled for 7 pm (SA time) on Friday.
Having secured qualification, Bafana Bafana enter Pot 3, which means they are likely to face one of the world’s top footballing nations, including Spain, Brazil, France, or the tournament’s co-hosts - the United States, Mexico, or Canada.

"For the next year, I think us and the USA will be a big conversation, especially if you get them in this draw, and now that Mbekezeli Mbokazi is also soon to move to Chicago Fire."
Mbebe says a rematch against Mexico (who beat South Africa 4–0 in 1993) would offer a chance to 'rewrite history' and seek symbolic revenge.
"Memories of Mexico are not great for me. Sorry to the Mexican fans who obviously will be excited to see their home team playing, but it would also be awesome for South Africa to rewrite history and make a big statement because Mexico didn't feel sorry for us when they took away the points so late in the game. So, it's our turn to get revenge."
Mbebe welcomed the expanded 48-team World Cup, saying it finally feels like a 'global' tournament that will introduce new stories and emerging nations to the world stage.
Looking ahead to South Africa’s chances, he hopes Bafana avoid a powerhouse in the group and says a favourable draw could see the national team win two matches and reach the knockout rounds for the first time.
"I think we've got a massive opportunity because of the style of football that we're getting. I do believe, if everything rolls in our favour, we could, for the first time, win two games at this World Cup.”
