As the festive season approaches, hostel residents in Diepkloof came together for what they call their “last dance” - a traditional Zulu performance that closes off the year.

Every year, community members from various hostels across Johannesburg gather for this moment.

Many of them came to the city seeking job opportunities, often leaving behind high unemployment and limited prospects back at home in KwaZulu-Natal.

The dance, rich in rhythm and heritage, becomes a space where they reconnect, celebrate their culture and find joy despite the challenges of urban life.

For the performers, the gathering is more than entertainment. It represents unity, identity and a reminder of their Zulu roots.
