Chief of Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department
With the festive season now in full swing, the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) is actively engaged in an operation to shut down illegal taverns across the metro.
On Friday, officers successfully closed three taverns in Mamelodi after the establishments failed to comply with certain city by-laws.
During the same operation, nine other illegally erected structures were identified. These structures are believed to be hideout spots for criminals, signalling a dual focus in the TMPD's enforcement efforts.
The operation follows a recent, tragic event earlier this month where twelve people were killed when gunmen opened fire in an illegal shebeen at a Saulsville hostel, west of the metro. Three minors were among the deceased, while survivors were hospitalised with injuries.
TMPD Spokesperson Puleng Motholo confirmed the department's unwavering commitment to compliance and safety.
"The closure of taverns was due to non-compliance of the city’s by-laws regulations and operating without the required establishment licenses. The TMPD remains resolute within maintaining order and by-law compliance in the city of Tshwane."
The department is urging all establishment owners to ensure they have the necessary documentation and are adhering to all municipal regulations to avoid similar closures.
