The magical Festival of Lights is open at the Johannesburg Zoo until 4 January 2026.

Alongside several impressive light installations, this year’s programme includes a vibrant lineup of live performances to look forward to each week.

Joining the lineup on Wednesday, 17 December is African indigenous music artist and drumming teacher Esther Maumela.

She uses her passion for music as a tool for healing, identity, and self-expression.

Maumela emphasizes the importance of indigenous instruments and music in our lives.

“I work with different institutions, early childhood development, whereby I teach African drums only to change learners' lives and get them out of their shells. I know music is entertainment, but why not make a difference in someone’s life?”

Her drumming workshop will be open to kids and adults on the night.
