The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has raised concern over the high number of motorists driving under the influence in the city.

It said close to 200 motorists were arrested for drunk driving in the past week as the festive fever kicks in.

The arrests are part of intensified roadblocks, roving patrols and targeted festive season operations.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said that law enforcement is taking a zero-tolerance approach to traffic violations.

“It is a stark reminder of the reckless and life-threatening behaviour that continues to plague our roads, especially as the festive season peaks. Every single drunk driver we remove from the road is a potential life saved, and a preventable tragedy averted.”

Fihla has called on motorists to avoid being on the wrong side of the law.

“Those arrested will be processed and will face the full might of the law. The consequences of a DUI conviction include hefty fines, potential imprisonment, and the suspension or revocation of a driving license.”
