Vote expected in KZN legislature on motion against Premier Ntuli

Voting is expected to get underway in the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Legislature, where a motion of no confidence against Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli has been tabled.

The motion was brought forward by the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, which cited failures within the Government of Provincial Unity (GPU) coalition.

A request by the MK Party for a secret ballot during the voting process has been denied by the Speaker.

Speaker Nontembeko Boyce read out the rules governing the motion before the commencement of the debate.

“If a provincial legislature by votes supported by a majority of its members passes a vote of no confidence in the Premier, the Premier and the other members of the provincial executive must resign.”

With the House bearing 80 seats, Boyce informed members that 41 votes would be the decisive figure for today’s outcome.

“For the motion to pass, a majority of members of this legislature must vote for the motion. As a reminder, the majority of members of this House is 41.”
