The Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus) has criticised the City of Cape Town’s proposed R180 million plan to construct a security wall along the N2 highway, labelling the expenditure as wasteful in its current form.

While the party acknowledges the need for increased safety, it is proposing a formal partnership with the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) to relieve the financial burden currently placed on the City and its ratepayers.

FF Plus representative Emre Uygun stated that all three spheres of government must collaborate on interim interventions before the wall’s construction begins. Uygun argued that the national roads agency should be footing at least part of the bill.

“SANRAL, which receives the bulk of the budget to safeguard our highways, should either cover the cost of the wall or make a contribution towards its construction,” said Uygun.

The party further cautioned that physical barriers are not a permanent solution to the ongoing safety crisis in the area.
“The Freedom Front Plus supports the proposed wall on the N2 bridge as a safety measure for motorists, but we warn that criminals will quickly find ways around it and that a wall is not a long-term solution,” Uygun added.
