Three people were arrested and 10 unroadworthy vehicles were impounded during a roadblock in Mtwalume, on the KwaZulu-Natal(KZN) South Coast, on Wednesday morning.
Traffic authorities and police conducted a stop-and-search operation in the area.
The Department of Transport said it was determined to ensure road accident rates were reduced.
Transport MEC Siboniso Duma joined the operation.
"We’ve already arrested three people this morning for drunk driving. They were so drunk early in the morning, which is unfair for our road users and pedestrians who will be coming across such vehicles," said Duma.
Duma said they impounded an overloaded bus that was travelling from Durban to the Eastern Cape.
"It is being taken to Hibberdene. We’ve already come across 400 vehicles this morning. There are minor things, such as front number plates not being installed deliberately, to ensure that cameras don’t recognise them. It is a common tendency," he said.
