Do you have a favourite getaway holiday destination in South Africa? When friends or family come from overseas, where do you recommend they go?

Those arriving at OR Tambo International Airport can now visit the recently launched Smart Tourism Visitor Information Centre.

It's an interactive, paperless hub offering real-time information on South Africa’s diverse tourism, culture, and heritage across all nine provinces.

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille says the hub makes it easy for visitors to discover what's on offer in Mzansi.

"We're really encouraging our visitors to visit all nine provinces, but showcasing them... especially the less visited provinces, so we can all share the benefits of tourism."

And information on where to visit isn't just available at the airport, explains de Lille.

Each province has a dedicated app for those looking for information on South Africa's must-see spots at the touch of a button.

"Just last week I had a meeting with all the MECs and every single province has got an app, where you can see what to do."

And what about safety once visitors are here?

Last week a 64-year-old grandmother was killed during a smash-and-grab attack on Jakes Gerwel Drive, after having arrived at Cape Town International Airport from Mpumalanga.

Government travel advisories from various countries often warn about the prevelance of violent crime in South Africa, so what is our government doing to ensure visitors (and locals) are safe?

"We regret an attack on any visitor, local or international."

De Lille says cabinet has recently endorsed a tourism growth partnership plan, of which safety and security is one of the 5 main pillars.

"We want a safe South Africa, and these travel advisories that go out tell us as South Africans that we need to do more about crime in our country."
