The Gauteng Department of Transport said parts of the R563 in Krugersdorp will remain closed due to a massive sinkhole.

A recent assessment has deemed the road unsafe for public use after it was closed more than two months ago.

Department spokesperson Lesiba Mpya said that the sinkhole continues to swallow parts of the road pending repair work.

“Departmental officials remain on site and will commence with the excavation of trenches to physically prevent vehicles from illegally accessing the closed section.”

Mpya has called on motorists to heed calls to avoid the affected area.

“While the department works to re-site barriers and install additional warning signage, it will continue to impress upon law enforcement agencies to enforce the road closure, prevent illegal access and reckless driving, in the interest of safety of all road users and surrounding communities.”
