The KwaZulu-Natal provincial government has stated that the full extent of the damage caused by Sunday’s severe rainfall is yet to be determined. Disaster management teams are currently working to quantify the destruction as mop-up operations continue across various parts of the province.
Tragically, rescue teams have recovered the bodies of three individuals, while the search continues for one person who remains missing.
KZN Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli visited Port Shepstone on Monday to assess the impact firsthand. During his visit, he was informed that at least three local businesses were unable to open their doors due to the severity of the storm damage.
While the provincial government is moving quickly, Premier Ntuli emphasised the need for accuracy before releasing final figures.

“We cannot confirm for now because they are still putting information together,” Ntuli said. “It is important they do a proper assessment and evaluation before we quantify the extent of the damage.”
Despite the lack of a final tally, the Premier admitted that the visual evidence points to a significant crisis for the region.
“However, we must say the damage is there,” Ntuli added, acknowledging the severity of the situation facing residents and business owners alike.
