The City of Cape Town's latest traffic crash report shows there's one death on Cape Town's roads every 11 hours.

The city’s Urban Mobility Directorate released its latest traffic crash report on Monday, providing statistics on all reported road traffic crashes in Cape Town from 2021 to 2024.

According to the report, more than 3,000 people were killed and close to 300,000 traffic crashes were recorded over the four-year period.

City Mayco for Mobility Rob Quintas said that 68% of the people killed in car crashes in the last four years are pedestrians.

The city's latest traffic crash report shows on average 181 traffic crashes happen every day, with fatal crashes accounting for nearly 1% of all reported cases.

"Behind every statistic is a family changed forever, and this is why we analyse the data carefully to guide road safety policy and design and targeted enforcement."

Quintas said that the crash report is based on data extracted from accident report forms at police stations and traffic centres in Cape Town.
