The African National Congress (ANC) in the Western Cape said it's seriously concerned about a video that has gone viral, showing the deputy mayor of Bitou, Nokuzola Kolwapi, firing a gun into the air.
The incident took place at Mgidi celebrations in KwaNokuthula, near Plettenberg Bay, over the weekend.
In the clip, Kolwapi can be seen allegedly firing several shots into the air while a crowd of people, mostly women and children, celebrate in the street, shouting "halala".
Police are investigating the incident.
Kolwapi represents the Ikhwezi Political Movement.
ANC provincial spokesperson Sifiso Mtsweni said, "We are calling on law enforcement agencies to conduct an independent and urgent investigation because, as we all know, discharging a firearm in public is a criminal offence.
“It could endanger the people around and ensure that people get hurt so we are calling for an independent investigation. We want the law enforcement agencies to act on the councillor."
