The Department of Education in Gauteng said it’s working around the clock to process last minute applications for the online placement of grade 1s and 8s for the 2026 academic year.
More than 7,000 late applications have been processed since the department reopened the online portal for placements earlier in December.
During the late application period, only schools with available space will appear on the system.
Placements made during this period cannot be declined and no objections or appeals will be allowed.
Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said progress has been made to enrol learners who applied on time.
“Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane wishes to announce that only 5,464 learners remain unplaced as part of the 2026 online admissions for grade 1 and grade 8. This reflects sustained progress in the placement of learners in Gauteng for the 2026 academic year.”
