The South African Policing Union (SAPU) has expressed its support for the Athlone Magistrate's Court's decision to deny bail to ten members of the Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) accused of murder.

The legal proceedings involve eleven AGU members who appeared in court on Tuesday in connection with the death of Manenberg resident, Wade Price.

Price was arrested on December 4 and died shortly thereafter, following allegations that he was suffocated during a police interrogation.

SAPU Western Cape Acting Provincial Secretary, Merae Otto, emphasised the union's stance on judicial independence and the gravity of the charges.

"SAPU Western Cape respects the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law and acknowledges that granting bail at this stage of the proceedings won't be in the interest of justice," said Otto.
