The community of Delft, in Cape Town, is reeling in shock following a deadly shooting at the local taxi rank.

Three taxi operators were shot on Thursday morning; two of them died on the scene, while the third victim later died in hospital.

Police said a white Toyota Quantum allegedly pulled up at the taxi rank, and shots were fired at the victims who were seated inside a parked taxi at the time.

Police have cordoned off sections of the taxi rank where the bodies of two of the taxi operators still lie on the ground.

The bodies are draped in foil while forensic investigators continue their work.

Detectives attached to the police's Serious and Violent Crimes Unit have been assigned the case.

A large group of community members has also gathered nearby.

The attack comes just days after taxi operators marched to the Nyanga Police Station, raising concerns about an apparent flare-up in taxi-related violence.

Operators have been calling for increased police patrols at taxi ranks and the installation of surveillance cameras to improve safety.
