Lungu’s family heading to SCA over burial rights after being granted leave to appeal

Former Zambian President Edgar Lungu’s family will now head to the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) over burial rights after the SCA granted the family leave to appeal.
At the centre of the case is whether burial rights are a private family matter or a state responsibility.
Lungu died in South Africa on 5 June 2025, where his remains currently are.
A South African High Court ordered the repatriation of his body to Zambia for a state funeral.
The family has challenged that ruling at the SCA.
The outcome will determine where and how the former president is laid to rest.
