Johannesburg Public Safety MMC Mgcini Tshwaku said the city is still weighting its options on how to deal with abandoned buildings.
Tshwaku on Tuesday conducted an operation aimed at taking down criminal syndicates.
This follows the murder of media personality Warrick Stock, known as DJ Warras, outside a building in the CBD last week.
Stock was shot while trying to enforce a court-ordered eviction to some tenants at a hijacked property.
Tshwaku said that his department has faced some challenges while trying to root out crime in the CBD.
“Because one of the things of the city one is that we don't have lighting, and I did tell my colleagues from the City Power that we need to light up the city because JMPD cannot work in the dark.
“Secondly, it is dirty, but you'll find that there is no pick it up or sometimes I mean they will go in and work in some other areas but there are some considered areas like your MTN rank and everything that that that that they actually need to work on.”
