Public works minister, Dean Macphearson, has requested that the council for built environment investigates the collapse of a two-storey building in Doornkop that killed three people.

On Sunday morning, part of the home collapsed, where six people were living. Three others survived and are receiving medical attention at Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital.

Preliminary reports from Johannesburg EMS indicate that the building structure was not compliant with safety standards.

Minister Macphearson said the council must identify any responsible parties and recommend actions to prevent similar incidents, adding that full cooperation with authorities will be required during the investigation.

He also sent his condolences to the families of the deceased, who include a 60-year-old, a 24-year-old, and a one-year-old girl child, and stressed that his department is committed to ensuring accountability and strengthening safety across the construction sector.
