The City of Cape Town has expressed disappointment with the judgment handed down in favour of the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival Association on Monday night.

The city has been ordered to provide the association with an alternative venue to host its minstrel competition.

In September, the association applied to use the Vygieskraal Stadium, but this request was denied just three days later.

In its statement, the city said the association failed to furnish mandatory documentation and could not legally proceed with the permit review.

Meanwhile, the association maintains that its Tweede Nuwe Jaar parade will proceed along the historic route, despite not being granted a permit by the city.

The association’s chairperson, Sedick Soeker, said their appeal for a permit has since also been rejected and they are calling on government to declare the route a national heritage.

"Apparently, one of my colleagues just informed me that the appeal has apparently failed. So, we're calling on the national government to get the ad together and have the secret as soon as possible."
