Seven people have died in a horrific crash on the R61 outside Mthatha in the Eastern Cape.
Paramedics arrived at the scene on Wednesday to what they described as chaos and carnage after three vehicles, including a taxi, collided on the road.
Several occupants were rushed to nearby hospitals and clinics for urgent medical care, while emergency teams worked to free those trapped in the wreckage.
ALS paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson says a police investigation will be conducted into the cause of the crash.
“The road was closed while emergency personnel worked at the scene. At this stage, the events leading up to the crash are unknown. However, saps were in attendance and will be investigating further.” Jamieson said.
