The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) said the Impendle Local Municipality has met the department’s deadline to pay all workers before the end of December 2025.
On Friday 26 December 2025, the department raised concerns over the municipality’s failure to pay workers their December salaries.
This was not the first time the municipality faced such a crisis, as workers were also not paid on time in May.
COGTA MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi had warned that action would be taken if the matter was not resolved by 31 December 2025.
Department spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila has since confirmed that employees have been paid.
“The MEC has commended the municipal leadership for adhering to the directive and ensuring that workers and their families were not left destitute during the festive season.”
