Firefighters battle Overstrand Municipality blaze

Firefighters are battling to control a veldfire that has been raging near Pearly Beach in the Overstrand Municipality for two days.

The fire was first reported along the R43 near Pearly Beach, where it spread to both sides of the road.

Overstrand municipal manager Dean O'Neill said firefighters and aerial water bombers are struggling to control the blaze.

O'Neil said the R43 between Uilenskraalmond in Gansbaai and Pearly Beach remains closed.  

"Due to the heavy smoke on the road and the usual gravel detour roads, motorists will now be redirected via Uilenskraalmond, Baardskeerdersbos, then through Elim and Die Damme and vice versa."
