The National Freedom Party (NFP) was set to withdraw from the KwaZulu-Natal Government of Provincial Unity (GPU) coalition on Monday.

The party was the kingmaker in the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), African National Congress (ANC), Democratic Alliance (DA) and NFP-led provincial government.

The NFP said its recently held national executive committee (NEC) meeting took a decision to pull out of the GPU coalition government in KwaZulu-Natal.

In a letter seen by EWN, the party said its only Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL), Mbali Shinga, who is also the MEC for Social Development in the province, must relinquish her position in the provincial government.

In fact, the NFP NEC instructed her to resign by Thursday.

In December, the party supported a motion against Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli brought by the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, but it failed as voting could not take place due to chaotic scenes by MK Party MPLs.

Attempts to get comment from Shinga were unsuccessful, while party president Ivan Barnes said they would hold a briefing in the coming days.
