As the ANC gears up to celebrate its 114th anniversary in Rustenburg today, some residents say the party needs to do a better job at governing.

The party has chosen the North West as the host province for its 8 January celebrations.

Leaders of the ANC, including President Cyril Ramaphosa, have over the past few days been criss-crossing the province engaging residents over service delivery issues.

The North West is an ANC stronghold.

The party has an outright majority in the provincial legislature and governs all the municipalities that fall under the North West, either outright or through coalitions.

However, the ANC has been forthright about the governance challenges in the North West, saying it needs to do better.

Eyewitness News spoke to some residents and these were their views:

"The president and the mayor is here but nothing has changed," saidJohn Sithole.

Nomathemba Mcondobi said: "As a citizen of South Africa, I don’t see myself as free. They say we have democracy in South Africa, I don’t feel, see or even know it."

"We really need them to help us and finish what they started. We have RDPs without toilets," said Carla Moyane.

John Mashaba said: "All we want from them is when we report a problem they respond and help us."

Today, 8 January, marks 113 years since the former liberation movement was formed in Bloemfontein
