The Department of Basic Education has confirmed that the 2025 matric results will be released on 13 January 2026, using only candidates’ examination numbers — a move that follows a high court ruling in December, and continues a practice in place since 2022.

This decision has sparked debate over privacy and compliance with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).

Distinguished Professor of Education at Stellenbosch University and President of the South African Academy of Science, Jonathan Jansen says he agrees with the judge's decision.

"Only the student would really know what that number is, there's no threat to that person's privacy... I think this is an overreaction."

Prof. Jansen also points out that no specific subjects' marks are published, so as far as he is concerned it is a "non-debate".
