Experts are exploring radical alternatives to minimise the gargantuan environmental impact of data centres.
A data centre houses computers and servers used to store and process digital information like websites and cloud services.
These centres consume vast amounts of electricity and water.
One proposal gaining traction is that of moving data centres into space.
Technology analyst and Stuff editor Toby Shapshak says while the idea is 'tantalising', in reality, it's a 'pie in the sky' solution.
"The cost of building a data centre is significant, but there's a whole bunch of other factors involved."
Shapshack explains that putting a data centre in space only solves one problem, that of keeping them cool (millions of gallons of water are currently needed daily for cooling).
"What about the stuff inside the data centre, that can't be at zero temperature in space, it'll crack and break."
Another factor to consider is cost, says Shapshack.
"It's very expensive to launch something into space. Very expensive."
Moreover, what happens when the hardware needs replacing, wonders Shapshack.
"You can't just send a technician up there to fix it!"
