The Department of Basic Education (DBE) says it will be increasing monitoring of National Senior Certificate examination papers in high-risk areas.

The decision comes after about 40 pupils in Tshwane were found to have cheated during the exams.

The department’s national investigating task team said processes will now need to be enhanced for the prevention, detection and invigilation control.

In a media briefing on Friday, DBE minister Siviwe Gwarube said copies of some exam papers were shared via USB drives, electronic messaging, screenshots and printed copies of the papers.

She added that while investigations are still ongoing, the names of the schools the cheating attended will not be named.

"As our usual system-wide checks did not show signs that the exams were not affected more widely, supporting the conclusion that the matter was contained and not widespread," said Gwarube.
