Helderberg residents say while upgrades to the area's sewerage system are welcome current spills cannot be ignored.

Residents from the area are set to petition the city later this week demanding accountability and immediate action to stop sewage spills in the area.

The community said that the ongoing sewage spills in the suburbs and discharge on beaches has impacted residents, businesses and beachgoers.

The city insists that plans are underway to upgrade the area's sewerage system.

Helderberg resident and water quality advocate Jamii Hamlin said, "We are very cognisant of the improvements and efforts taking by the City of Cape Town to improve its basic services and upgrade its water and sanitation delivery to all the residents."

Hamlin said that despite this the ongoing sewage problem still needs to be highlighted and dealt with.

"As a group and a community we are joining together to raise awareness to this and we call everyone to join us."

Hamlin said that residents will meet at Strand Beach to start the protest at 6pm on Friday.
