Air traffic services at O.R. Tambo International Airport have returned to normal after experiencing prolonged delays since 4 January due to adverse weather conditions and staff shortages.
That's according to Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) spokesperson Mphilo Dlamini.
"Last Sunday, we had that O.R. Tambo isolated case of staffing constraints. I think that one was resolved the following day. All staffing levels that are required at all our stations and our pools are adequately resourced, so we are not anticipating any issue."
Dlamini says this past weekend (10 and 11 January), they were handling 50 or more flights per hour, and there were no glitches or disruptions.
"According to the forecast for the rest of the week, I don't foresee serious weather conditions that may affect us," Dlamini said.
Before the festive season, experts expressed concern about ATNS's ability to meet deadlines to renew flight procedures.
These procedures are essential for flights to land or take off from an airport.
