As the class of 2025 celebrates their matric results, South Africa faces a growing challenge: the number of learners qualifying for tertiary education far exceeds available spaces.

Over 345,000 students qualify for admission, while fewer than 200,000 first year spots exist across universities, leaving thousands without immediate opportunities.

Deputy Director-General of the Department of Higher Education and Training, Sam Zungu, says the department is exploring online learning and digital platforms as alternative ways to expand access.

TVET colleges are also receiving renewed attention after years of underinvestment.

Zungu explains that outdated programmes are being phased out, infrastructure is being refurbished, and new campuses have been built, with additional private sector support for ICT upgrades.

"Government is now much more committed in making sure that we grow the focus on TVET colleges."

Life after matric

Career guidance is emerging as crucial for learners navigating life after matric.

Ari Katz, CEOof Boston City Campus, encourages students to view multiple pathways (including private higher education, online learning, gateway programmes, and cognitive development initiatives) as valid routes to success.

Katz stresses that even if matric results fall short of expectations, students can build skills progressively through certificates, diplomas, and degrees.

"A matric certificate is what I call a multi-level passport with many destinations. We live in a world where there are a multitude of opportunities, particularly with the implementation of AI and the e-learning and the e-commerce world, the whole world has actually opened up to us.

"Matric is definitely not the be-all and end-all. It is definitely a step in the right direction. There's no question about that, and I don't want to take away from that. There are still a number of opportunities, and even if they didn't do well, it's not the end of the world."
