As thousands of school leavers prepare to begin their post-Matric studies, the Department of Higher Education and Training is warning learners to be on high alert for 'bogus' colleges.
The Department said these unregistered institutions often target Matrics during results season, luring them with promises of quick qualifications that are not recognised.
Deputy Minister of Higher Education Dr Mimmy Martha Gondwe said it is a worry that such set-ups continue to thrive.
"They pretend to be legitimate, they use gimmicks, they offer huge discounts and offer programs that appear to be in high demand."
She said these unscrupulous colleges target vulnerable students and parents.
"Especially at this time of year, they are desperate to get an opportunity post leaving school."
More worrying till, said Gondwe, is how bogus colleges have entered the online space.
"They commit fraud by purporting to offer online courses and qualifications that are offered outside the country, when in fact they are not recognised outside the country."
She added that enrolling at an unregistered institution can leave students with qualifications that are not accredited, wasting time and money and potentially limiting future study or employment opportunities.
The Department is urging parents and students to do their homework when it comes to establishing whether a college is legitimate or not.
"Registration lies within our purview as the Department, when it comes to accreditation, that speaks more to the program of qualifications that a college is offering."
Students and parents are being urged to verify institutions through the Department of Higher Education and Training, the relevant South African Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), as well as with quality councils such as SAQA and the Council on Higher Education (CHE).
