Heavy rainfall has forced widespread closures and evacuations across the Kruger National Park, with rising rivers cutting off access between large parts of the reserve.
SANParks spokesperson Reynold Thakhuli confirms that several camps and gates have been closed, including Crocodile Bridge and Letaba Rest Camp, as rivers burst their banks and key bridges were submerged.
"It's really bucketing down quite heavily here."
He adds that guests and staff have been evacuated from multiple locations, including Shingwedzi Rest Camp, which is now underwater, and the Rhino Walking Safari, where 27 guests were airlifted out as a precaution.
Thakhuli says movement within the park is currently limited.
"Most areas are covered by water; you can't move from the north to the south or from the south to the north at this particular moment. We are observing all these rivers within the park, and some of them might be closed without much notice because the rivers are really rising."
Rain is expected to continue until at least Monday, raising concerns about further damage to roads, bridges and camps.
Visitors with upcoming bookings have been advised to consider cancellations or amendments, with SANParks offering refunds without penalties, while officials warn that recovery could take weeks or even months once conditions stabilise.
