Some political parties have added their voices to criticising the Western Cape government over the thousands of unplaced learners.
The Western Cape Education Department on Wednesday, confirmed that 7540 learners are yet to be placed in schools.
It said although 10 000 late applications hindered placement, it has added 175 new classrooms to the system.
But the GOOD party’s Brett Heron said systemic failures are denying children the chance to reach their full potential.
"Behind every number is a child whose education has been interrupted, and each day without placement is a day of learning lost, time that cannot be recovered, and inequality that is further entrenched," said Heron.
Meanwhile, The Freedom Front Plus said the shortage of schools in the province is leading to overcrowded classes.
The party's Grant Marais said: "Parents have reported class sizes of over 40 learners per class, which undermines effective learning. The Freedom Front Plus will continue to engage with the department and the minister to ensure that learners are placed and that long-term solutions are prioritized, as no child should be left behind."
