Johannesburg City Power has raised concerns about government departments based in the CBD that continue to default on their electricity payments.

The municipal power utility is owed more than R10 billion by both residential and commercial customers.

A significant portion of this debt is attributed to commercial properties in the inner city, including government-owned buildings.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said the city is losing substantial revenue due to non-paying customers.

"We have close to a billion rand owed by government departments within the inner city. That is really concerning because these institutions are meant to be assisting in terms of paying for the services so that we can have money to keep the operations on."
