President Cyril Ramaphosa has highlighted the need to strengthen Early Childhood Development (ECD) programmes to promote literacy among children from a young age.
Speaking at the Basic Education Lekgotla held at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg on Wednesday, Ramaphosa focused on the critical role of early learner development.
The department has been working to expand childhood development centres nationwide but continues to face challenges related to funding and infrastructure capacity.
Ramaphosa said improving early childhood development is expected to contribute to higher matric pass rates in the future.
“By investing in early childhood education, our country can foster greater communities and support equitable access to education and promote life-long success for all children.”
