Minister of Electricity Kgosintsho Ramokgopa says his team has identified a solution that could help bring down the price of electricity.
This as consumers continue raising concerns about the unaffordable cost of electricity.
Electricity prices went up by 12.7% in 2025, and more price hikes are looming, with another double-digit increase likely in 2026.
In 2025, the national energy regulator was caught in a R76 billion calculation error in its price determination.
Speaking on 702 from the World Economic Forum on Wednesday morning, Ramokgopa said key to reducing the price of electricity is reducing the cost of coal.
“So, we have found what we think is a unique solution. If you look at the price of electricity, the primary driver is what we call the primary energy. It's the cost of coal, really. It's about 40% of the cost of electricity. So, if you are able to bring that down, then we are in a sweet spot. We are in the game.”
