City of Ekurhuleni Mayor Doctor Xhakaza has strongly denied being involved in the murders of DJ Bongani Mfihlo and the metro’s former auditor, Mpho Mafole.
His denial comes after a recent News24 report placing him at the scene of Mfihlo’s death and accusing him of misleading police about Mafole’s assassination.
On Friday, Xhakaza held a media briefing and responded to some of the allegations.

Following the death of Mafole, Xhakaza told the media he was investigating the city’s R2 billion electricity shortfall before his killing.
The News24 report said this was a diversion by Xhakaza as Mafole was investigating the city’s irregular R667 million chemical tender.
Xhakaza has distanced himself from the reports, saying: “I reject the insinuation and any suggestion that I interfered with, influenced or sought to derail any investigations in the strongest possible terms.”
He added that the police should be given the necessary space to investigate the deaths of Mafole and DJ Mfihlo.
“I reject the insinuation and any suggestion that I interfered with, influenced or sought to derail any investigations in the strongest possible terms,” said Doctor Xhakaza, Ekurhuleni mayor.
